Positivity and Perseverance: Sixth-Graders Raise Funds to Attend a Week-Long Science Camp in Yosemite

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a national park with your school friends? This past December, our sixth-grade students made that dream a reality. 36 middle school students from Almond Acres Charter Academy spent a week exploring Yosemite National Park at their first-ever science camp!

The Dream of Yosemite

Attending a science camp in Yosemite National Park seemed like a great way to allow the students to experience something other than the Central Coast. The chance to visit one of the most renowned national parks in the United States was the ultimate dream. But there was one hurdle: funding.

To ensure every student had the opportunity to attend, students and their families, with support from school administrators, launched a series of fundraisers to cover the cost of travel, accommodations, and camp expenses.

Raising the Funds

Because Charter Schools receive less funding than traditional public schools, they rely on private donations and grants, especially for extracurricular programs and events. The students, families, and administrators took the initiative. From drive-thru BBQs (thank you, Stein’s Catering) to selling pizza meals to local restaurant fundraisers (thank you, Burritos Express) to Jamba Juice Gift Cards (thank you, Jamba), every dollar raised represented not just their hard work, but the support of a community.

Through these efforts, the group reached its fundraising goal in just a few months!

A Week of Discovery

After months of preparation and fundraising, the students set off for Yosemite, ready to experience firsthand the beauty and wonder most had never experienced firsthand!

At the science camp, students participated in hands-on science activities, learning about geology, ecology, and the diverse flora and fauna of the park. The campers averaged 11 miles of hiking daily, with some days closer to 15 miles. Night-time activities included student skits, star gazing, camp games, and night hikes. Students learned about forest conservation, the history of Yosemite Valley, and wildlife. They explored the park, learning and observing the ecosystem in action. The camp’s educators provided invaluable lessons about environmental stewardship, helping the students understand the importance of preserving the natural world.

One of the trip’s highlights was being unplugged and seeing so much of Yosemite Valley.  There were very few tourists, so the students felt like they had the whole place themselves.

The students remarked about various things they learned and memories they’ll remember forever.

“I’ll never forget the bus ride in Yosemite Valey with the best bus driver ever when we sang songs,” said Reagan.

Jameson, another student said his highlight was, “Cutting down trees to help keep the forest healthy.” He was also surprised to learn how the glaciers carved out the valley.

For Kinsley, hiking through the bear caves is an experience she will never forget.

A Lasting Impact

The trip was not just an educational experience—it shows what can happen with a little perseverance and teamwork. The students, families, and administrators came together with a common goal and made it happen.

The success of this trip has sparked even more excitement for our rising sixth graders for their week at science camp!

Thank you to everyone who supported this dream. Together, we helped our students create memories and a learning experience that will last a lifetime. Together, we’re growing great kids!
